THE NEW YEAR.
85
New friend, we greet thee with a solemn feeling!
Though thou hast brought us hopes of a bright hue, A pensive sadness through the heart is stealing,
Just as we bid the flying year adieu!
We think of joys borne on its wing away ;
We think of friends whom it hath parted far— O, the heart's purest pleasures may not stay,
They are more fleeting than those moments were!
We think of hours, for our improvement given, Fled, fled forever from our grasp on earth; Of blessings which have spread the wing for heaven— Those that we deem'd of high and lasting worth.
New Year! we turn our longing eyes to thee, Resolved, as thou shalt measure, one by one,
Our moments, hast'ning to eternity, We will improve them as we ne'er have done |
Then pass along, and leave us on the shore Of this rude world, to struggle with the waves; Or, ere thy fleeting moments shall be o'er, Steal our last breath, and wander o'er our graves.
